Presidential Palace

Get a behind-the-scenes look at the grand residence of Lithuania’s president on a guided tour and admire the palace’s architecture from the public square.

Vilnius’ Presidential Palace is an elegant neoclassical manor located on a site that has been used as a residence for bishops, emperors, kings, noblemen and presidents since the 14th century. Check out the splendid architecture of this heritage building from the outside or join a tour to explore its lavish interiors and manicured gardens. Learn about the leaders and dignitaries who have resided and worked in the magnificent palace and watch the ceremonial changing of the guard.

Stroll down the narrow street that leads to Daukanto Square, a broad plaza in front of the palace. The magnificent Empire-style palace will come into view. This expansive cream-colored manor was reconstructed in 1834 and features grand colonnades and symmetrical pediments. If the flag flying above the building is hoisted high, the President of Lithuania is in the country.

Join a tour to gain a special insight into the private domain of the president and the chancellery. You’ll see the extravagant interior architecture, as well as the lavish furnishings of the various halls and offices throughout the building. If you are lucky, your guide will show you the office of the president. Explore the back gardens of the palace to see a quaint courtyard surrounded by lush lawns and garden beds. To one side, find the small grassy area dotted with stone sculptures.

Visit at the end of the work day to witness the changing of the guard or at midday on Sunday to see the fascinating flag-hoisting ceremony. The soldiers of the Honour Guard Company of the Lithuanian Armed Forces observe this traditional ritual.

The Presidential Palace is located in Daukanto Square near Vilnius’ Old Town and adjacent to the Vilnius University campus. Free English-language tours of the palace are run on Fridays and Sundays. Several Lithuanian-language tours run on Saturdays and Sundays. Book ahead to secure your place in the tour group. Tours take about 45 minutes. See the changing-of-the-guard ceremony on any day outside the palace for free.
