Prambanan

Travel Guide
Prambanan which includes heritage architecture, a sunset and heritage elements
These spectacular temples are among the most important religious sites in Java. Visit them to be astounded by their centuries-old grandeur and intricacy.

The Prambanan temple complex is an iconic Java attraction, home to the largest Hindu place of worship on the island. Its three main temples and dozens of smaller structures remain awe-inspiring centuries after they were built. The nearby Buddhist temples, which are sometimes considered part of the complex, are equally remarkable. Come to this UNESCO World Heritage Site and wonder at these beautiful relics of Java’s diverse religious history.

Find out more about the main part of the Prambanan complex, which is sometimes known as Roro Jonggrang. This incredible site, consisting of around 240 structures, was once nearly lost to history. It was built in the 8th century, fell into disrepair in the 10th century, and was further damaged by an earthquake in the 16th century. Painstaking restoration work carried out in the 1930s reconstructed and preserved the ornate details that make this place so magical.

Set aside a full day to explore this sprawling complex where beauty can be found in every corner. Marvel at the scale of the Trimurti Temples, the three main buildings dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. As you approach, snap photos of these stunning structures set against a backdrop of lush green Javanese landscape. Up close, inspect the elaborate carvings that cover every surface of all the structures.

Spend the rest of the day visiting the Buddhist temples built close by. Walk the 0.4 miles (800 meters) to ancient Sewu Temple, one of the largest collections of Buddhist temples in Indonesia. Admire the enormous statues that guard the entrance. On the way, stop at Bubrah Temple and Lumbung Temple, smaller but equally fascinating Buddhist places of worship.

On certain evenings, see hundreds of Ramayana dancers perform outdoors in the atmospheric setting of Prambanan. Another event well worth attending is the Tawur Agung celebration, which is held in spring and sees the complex fill with Hindus bearing colorful umbrellas and offerings to the gods.

Remember to dress modestly when you visit the temple complex. From Yogyakarta, reach Prambanan by taxi. The journey is only around 11 miles (18 kilometers), but the destination feels like a far-off time and place.

"Nice and modern room that is also super spacey. The breakfast selection is great and the club menus are decent too. Staff are very helpful. 10 seconds sheltered walk to the big mall with plenty of f&b options. But the traffic around the hotel is often quite congested"
