Prague State Opera

Attend an opera or ballet performance in this grand neoclassical venue, whose opulent auditorium features red velvet and beautiful gilding.

The Prague State Opera is one of the Czech capital’s premier cultural venues, and attracts opera and ballet lovers from around the world. Buy tickets to see an opera or ballet show to gain access to its beautiful neo-Rococo style auditorium.

Constructed in 1888, the Prague State Opera was originally known as the German Theatre. The famous Viennese architects Fellner and Helmer, known for designing theaters all across Central Europe, were involved with the design.

Admire the theater’s grand façade from the outside. The neoclassical frontage features columns and a sculptured triangular pediment. Look for statues of Dionysus, the Greek god of fertility, wine and theater, and of Thalia, the goddess of comedy, standing atop the building.

Purchase show tickets to gain access to the theater’s auditorium. Choose between a wide range of opera and ballet works from the likes of Puccini, Verdi and Tchaikovsky.

Enter through the elegant forum and make your way to your seat in the auditorium. This ornate space features a huge hanging chandelier, ceiling frescoes and lots of plush red velvet and gilded detailing. For a VIP experience, consider booking one of the opera boxes. Compared to other opera venues, tickets are often reasonably priced.

From your seat, gaze down at the stage where many greats of the opera world have performed. Among the many famous faces to have taken to the stage here are Italian tenor Enrico Caruso and German soprano Lilli Lehmann. Esteemed composers such as Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler have also directed performances at the venue.

The Prague State Opera is just a short stroll from New Town’s Wenceslas Square. Ride the metro, tram or bus to the Muzeum station. The theater is wheelchair accessible. Opera season at this venue usually runs between September and June, with special Christmas-themed concerts taking place during the festive period. Book tickets in advance to secure the best seats. Most attendees wear smart dress so avoid sportswear and jeans.
