From this busy square elegant avenues fan out in all directions, leading to major city landmarks and popular areas of the Old Town.

Plaza Principe de Viana (Prince of Viana Square) is a bustling intersection set on the southern outskirts of Pamplona’s historic center. It makes an interesting stop to admire stately buildings before continuing to other significant city attractions. Plaza Principe de Viana takes its name from a title of the heir to the Spanish monarchy. It was first appointed by King Carlos III to his grandson Carlos, Prince of Viana.

The square’s primary function is as a traffic circle, although it does have aesthetic appeal to tourists. In the center is a collection of colorful flowerbeds that surround an ornamental fountain. The fountain is most impressive after sundown, when it is illuminated by bright lights. Christmas lights and decorations add further charm in December. Many of the surrounding buildings are residential and also feature cafés, restaurants and shops on the lower floors.

It’s possible to reach several interesting sights within 10 minutes' walk from the plaza. Stroll north along Avenida San Ignacio into the heart of the Old Town and visit the Palace of Navarre and Plaza del Castillo. Close to here is Plaza de Toros de Pamplona, the location for bullfights and the world-famous Running of the Bulls.

Go east to Plaza de las Merindades, which intersects Avenida de Carlos III el Noble. Once part of the city’s fortification walls, the avenue was redeveloped into a vibrant and pedestrian-only commercial zone. Another fun thing to do is to visit the Citadel, a vast green space home to bastions, forts, gateways and military barracks. Join the locals that come to relax, exercise and enjoy picnics in this scenic area.

Plaza Principe de Viana is well-served by the city’s bus routes. Otherwise, it’s easy to get to on foot from most areas of the Old Town. Drivers will find metered car parks near to the square.
