This popular green space in the center of the city is famous for its historic monument to independence and its striking Catholic church.

Plaza Libertad is a place of historic significance in San Salvador. This was the starting point of the city’s expansion in the middle of the 16th century. Come here to see the Monument to the Heroes in the center of the square or to take a stroll along the grass.

Bring your camera with you to photograph the impressive Monument to the Heroes. This marble and bronze structure was installed in 1911 to commemorate 100 years of Central America’s independence from Spanish rule. At its pinnacle is the figure of the angel of liberty, holding laurels in both hands. Look further down to see carvings and medallions of some of the key figures in the independence movement.

Rest on the monument’s steps and watch as tourists and residents pass through the plaza. Observe how well the trees have been manicured into regular shapes. The memorial is also a popular resting spot for local birds.

Stroll over to the east side of the square to visit the Iglesia El Rosario. From the outside, this church resembles a concrete aircraft hangar. Inside, it is filled with modern art décor. Admire the stained glass windows embedded into the walls and ceiling, which provide color and light to the otherwise dark interior.

As you walk around the square, you may see carpenters, painters and plumbers offering their services. Plaza Libertad attracts many casual workers looking for employment. Stop for a pupusa, a corn tortilla with a savory filling, from a street food stand. Make sure to enjoy your snack on one of the benches lining the plaza instead of near the monument, unless you want to share it with the birds.

Plaza Libertad is located in downtown San Salvador. It is served by numerous bus routes. If travelling by car, you can find free parking spaces in nearby streets. The square is two blocks east of Plaza Barrios. Explore nearby historic buildings, such as Catedral Metropolitano and Palacio Nacional.
