Find a quiet place to enjoy a siesta in this peaceful park, complete with a playground and a monument to the city’s Italian heritage.

The picturesque Plaza Italia (Italian Square) is a welcome touch of greenery in the center of Mendoza. Pay a visit to this small parkland in the quiet hours of the afternoon to enjoy its babbling fountain and admire its statues. Bring a picnic and enjoy some downtime while the kids entertain themselves at the local playground.

Plaza Italia was built after an earthquake in 1861, which greatly damaged the city. It is one of four plazas surrounding Independence Square in Mendoza’s historic district. These squares were designed to pay tribute to the founders of the city and create a natural retreat for its residents.

The plaza is a memorial to the Italian community who greatly influenced life in Mendoza’s Cuyo province. Look out for monuments, such as the statue of Romulus and Remus being suckled by the Roman Wolf. This sculpture was designed by Luis Perlotti and represents the foundation story of Rome.

Admire the square’s central fountain, which is decorated with Italian-style stonework. The benches surrounding this central water are a great place to read a book or simply sit and admire the scenery.

The park makes for a tranquil escape from the bustle of the city and is a fantastic place to visit at siesta time. Join locals having a nap beneath the trees or buy some picnic supplies from the nearby Mercado Central and spread out on the grass. The playground in the northwest corner will keep the kids occupied while you relax.

Plaza Italia is located in Mendoza’s central area. It is a comfortable walk from most downtown attractions, and can also be reached by bus. The historic district surrounding the plaza is well worth exploring after your visit. Walk to the other plazas nearby to see their unique water features and learn about their memorials. In the evening, stroll through the well-lit Independence Square and see a show at the nearby Independence Theatre.
