Linger awhile amid the peaceful ambiance of Plaza del Carmen (Plaça del Carme). This pretty square stands in the heart of El Carmen, a neighborhood of Valencia’s Old Town known for meandering streets, boutiques and tapas bars. Visit a historic church at Plaza del Carmen, attend art exhibitions or simply take a seat and watch the world pass by.
Elegant buildings with flower-filled wrought-iron balconies and shutter windows surround three sides of the square. These buildings look onto an area decorated with orange trees, palms and hedges. In the middle is a statue of the Renaissance-era painter Juan de Juanes standing on a pedestal. Famous for his portrayals of religious subjects, Juanes contributed a painting of the Holy Family to the sacristy of Valencia Cathedral.
The imposing facade of the Church of Santa Cruz looms over the square. Ionic columns stand either side of the doorway and frame niches home to sculptures of St. Simon Stock and John of the Cross. Above the door is the coat of arms of the Order of Carmen. An image of the Virgin of Carmen dominates the middle section and a sculpture of St. Joseph flanked by Solomonic columns adorns the upper part.
Adjacent to the church is the Centre del Carme, an arts and exhibition venue housed in the 13th-century Convent of Carmen. It showcases art, cinema, dance, music and theater. The center is open from Tuesday to Sunday and admission is free. Visit the center’s official website for information about current events.
Plaza del Carmen is close to various attractions in Valencia’s Old Town. Use the square as a base for exploring the El Carmen neighborhood. Marvel at remnants of the ancient city walls such as the Torres de Quarts and Torres de Serranos defensive towers. Visit the Institut Valencia d’Art Modern and the Prehistory Museum of Valencia.
