The site of celebrations and activities, Plaza de la Constitución is the main square of San Sebastian. Majestic colonnades of grand buildings surround the spacious plaza, which was formerly a bullfighting arena. Consider the rich and intriguing history of this square and how the city formed around it.

Gaze up at the brightly colored fixtures and shutters on the white façades of the buildings that surround this plaza. Colorful cascading flowers adorn the terraces. Learn about the fascinating past of the square, which was constructed in 1817 by the architect Ugartemendia. Numbers marking the tops of the windows on the surrounding buildings denote the bullring boxes of the former arena that stood on this spot.

Browse the items on sale at the various shops and stores dotted around the square. Relax with drinks and snacks and watch people go by from a café with tables set out on the spacious plaza. Purchase the rollitos desserts that consist of pastry rolls usually containing strawberries and chocolate, among other ingredients.

Due to its central location and historic importance, the Plaza de la Constitución is a typical gathering point for locals. Meet friends here in the evening for a glass of wine at a terraced bar. Enjoy the lively and communal ambiance as kids play in the square.

See the square come to life during the city’s main festivals, such as the Tamborrada in January and the Santo Tomás in December. Try traditional chistorra sausages and other typical delicacies at one of the stalls that are set up for celebrations.
