Admire architectural masterpieces, attend concerts and shop at markets at this medieval square in the heart of Luxembourg City’s historic center.

Place Guillaume II is a public square framed by café terraces and impressive buildings. The origins of Place Guillaume II can be traced back to the 1200s, when it was the site of a Franciscan monastery. Locals often call it Knuelder, which is a reference to the knot of a Franciscan monk’s belt.

Two striking monuments dominate this leafy square. Toward the east side is an equestrian statue of William II, the one-time King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg to whom the square is dedicated. On the southwest corner is the Town Hall, a 19th-century neoclassical palace built using bricks from the former monastery. Note the two lion sculptures that guard the staircase and entrance.

Cafés and restaurants line the west side of the square and the outdoor seating areas present excellent people-watching opportunities. Visit the square on a Wednesday and Saturday, when locals and tourists alike come to shop at the farmers markets. With vendors from Austria, Greece, Italy and other European nations, the markets provide a true reflection of the city’s international community. Find everything from baked goods and cheese, to cured meats, flowers, fresh fruits and spices.

Another popular event held here is Rock um Knuedler. This free one-day music festival takes place in July and welcomes around 15,000 spectators. It features performances by national bands and international acts.

Pay a visit to the Luxembourg City Tourist Office, located on the western side of the square. Here you can pick up maps of the city and learn about events such as festivals of art and street performers. Guided tours of some of the city’s major attractions also start from the office.

Place Guillaume II is easy to get to on foot from all areas of Luxembourg City’s city center. Public buses and a hop-on hop-off tourist bus stop close to the square. Attractions within comfortable walking distance are the Edmund Klein Park, Notre-Dame Cathedral and Palais Grand Ducal.
