Golden sand, inviting water, glorious sunsets and a picturesque esplanade make this beach one of the main attractions of Piriápolis.

At the center of the historic town of Piriápolis is the attractive Piriápolis Beach (Playa Piriápolis). Its convenient location makes it the town’s liveliest and most famous beach. During the summer, local and visiting beachgoers descend upon the golden sand to bask in the glorious sunshine and enjoy stunning coastal scenery.

Piriápolis Beach sweeps uninterrupted for about 2 miles (3 kilometers) around Piriápolis Bay. Rent a sun lounger and umbrella or lay a towel on the soft sand. Gaze out across the glistening bay and spot natural landmarks, such as the hills of Cerro San Antonio and Cerro Pan de Azúcar.

The enticing and shallow water is ideal for cooling off on a warm day. Lifeguards patrol the beach from early December until early March. Scattered along the beach are several stands that arrange watersport activities and rent equipment. Have some fun on a Jet Ski and try windsurfing. Enjoy family-friendly entertainment on a thrilling water sled ride.

At the southern edge of the beach, find a sports zone with soccer fields and volleyball courts. Join in a pick-up game or watch volleyball tournaments, which take place in January and February.

Framing the entire length of the beach is a paved esplanade called Rambla de los Argentinos. Join other runners, skaters and walkers or find a spot to watch the sunset. At night the landscape changes as the esplanade’s antique street lamps elegantly illuminate the beach.

The continuation of the esplanade leads to Piriápolis Port. From here, a chairlift travels up to Cerro San Antonio and panoramic views. Before or after visiting the hill, go to the port’s food stands to sample a delicious empanada filled with fresh seafood.

Piriápolis Beach is easy to reach on foot from the town’s main tourist areas. Use the available free parking along Rambla de los Argentinos it’s customary to tip the parking attendants. Buses operate regularly between the beach and Montevideo and Punta del Este.
