Peruse fascinating works to learn about Taiwan’s edgy art scene in the dystopian setting of abandoned warehouses by the sea.

Set in the retro location of a site of abandoned warehouses, Pier-2 Art Center has been brought back to life as a thriving contemporary art scene. Visit this hub of creativity and imagination, where graffiti art stands next to iron works, sculptures and modern paintings. The site comprises several storerooms, each with their own distinctive style and theme.

Capture photos of the extraordinary works of art on display. Browse the various exhibits in the warehouses. The crowds generally consist of young adults and teenagers who enjoy the modern vibe. The art varies and changes regularly, but expect to see disproportionally shaped sculptures of animals, satirical pieces aimed at Taiwanese traditions and some works of a graphic or sexual nature.

The site often hosts live shows, such as the Point & Wavy Ribbon Performance, in the warehouses. Gaming fans should check out Warehouse 9 to see where the latest video games are tested. Enjoy a meal in style at the C3 Warehouse, where the walls are covered in artworks. Try the seafood pizza with a Taiwanese beer.

Enjoy the eerie, somewhat empty atmosphere of the abandoned warehouse park. Smell the salt in the sea breeze that flows past your ears. Attend one of the art events, such as the Chinese Character Exhibition or the Kaohsiung Design Festival, that occur throughout the year.

The warehouses date back to the 1970s and were originally used by the port industry for storage. Discovering the area after a fireworks display, local artists moved in to renovate it, before the Bureau of Cultural Affairs officially started managing the center in 2006, promoting exhibitions.

The Pier-2 Art Center is next to Kaohsiung Harbour, right in the heart of the city. Ride the metro to Yanchengpu Station and walk southwest for a few blocks to reach the gallery. While you’re here, walk the short distance to Love River, where you will find scenic parks, museums and cafés along the banks.
