Amid the city’s historic center is this architecturally impressive square surrounded by cafés, souvenir shops and the State Museum of San Marino.

Piazza del Titano is a busy square located amid San Marino’s UNESCO-listed Historic Centre. It’s a great place to admire the city’s striking architectural landscape and enjoy people-watching from a café terrace. The square is also home to an excellent museum, which showcases the nation’s archaeological and artistic history an the history of its currency.

Stand in the center of Piazza del Titano and gaze up at its austere palace-like buildings. Note the recurrent characteristics such as pilasters and simple balconies. On one side of the square is an imposing arched entranceway. Look beneath one of the arches for an embossed stone carving that depicts St. Marino as a stone mason.

A major highlight of the square is the State Museum of San Marino, which spreads throughout the rooms of the Palazzo Pergami Belluzzi. It holds about 5,000 artifacts that relate to San Marino’s history and ancient civilizations from around the world.

In the museum, find pottery from an ancient Villanovan settlement and costume jewelry belonging to the Domagnano Treasure. Spot artwork by acclaimed Italian artists, including Guercino. See statuettes from ancient Egypt, Etruscan vases and a national coin collection, which dates from 1864 to 1939.

Go to the café opposite the museum, grab a seat at the outdoor area and observe as a mix of locals and camera-bearing tourists pass by. The café is part of the 19th-century Hotel Titano, which also has a rooftop restaurant with excellent city views. Alternatively, browse the shops that sell everything from curios to high-end jewelry and leather handbags.

Piazza del Titano is easy to reach on foot from other city attractions. Liberty Square and Piazza Garibaldi are both less than a 5-minute walk away. Guaita Tower is about a 10-minute walk uphill from the square. The State Museum of San Marino is open daily, except for select public holidays, and has an admission fee. Visit the museum’s official website for more information, including details of a combined ticket for several city attractions.
