With giraffes, penguins, creepy crawlies and Australia’s famous home-grown pouched creatures among its many species, Perth Zoo is a fun day out for the family.

With 1,200 different animals from over 160 species, the 1.7-million-square-metre Perth Zoo dates all the way back to 1898 and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors year on year. Holidaymakers flock here to admire the local wildlife they can learn so much about, alongside a range of other exhibits demonstrating species from four different continents around the world.

Check out the Australian Bushwalk section for a fascinating insight into the region’s wildlife. With marsupials such as koalas, red kangaroos, wallabies and wombats, not to mention amazing Tasmanian devils, there are plenty of animals to see and admire. In the Australian Wetlands section you can spot local birds, crocodiles, frogs and tortoises before heading to Nocturnal House to see spiders, reptiles, birds and much more.

Explore the Reptile Encounter to see native snakes, lizards and turtles, before checking out the Penguin Plunge and its 50,000-litre pool and its reefs, beaches and plant life. Elsewhere you’ll find the African Savannah where you can feed giraffes as well as see the rhinos and lions along with the hyenas, cheetahs and baboons.

In the Animals of the Americas section you’ll get to see a rare Galapagos tortoise along with the marmosets, alligators and macaws. In the Asian Rainforest there are orang-utans, sun bears and Komodo dragons along with towering Asian elephants.

Make sure you spend some time with the zoo’s botanic collection, with incredible plants from across the country, including everything from roses to huge palm trees.

Located in the south of Perth just over three kilometres from the city centre, the Perth Zoo is open every day including major holidays. If you’re coming by car, you’ll have to pay to park in the nearby streets. Public transport is also available you can board the ferry to Mends Street Jetty too. Under-16s can enter for half the price.
