Relax and appreciate the pretty surroundings of Chengdu’s enormous park. Join locals as they sip tea, sail on the lake and enjoy the vibrant flower garden.

The People’s Park is a major landmark in Chengdu. Many local residents come here to unwind and enjoy the open spaces, the natural beauty and the entertainment amenities. Join them and go sailing on the lake, drink tea in the teahouses, browse an exhibition and watch a live performance.

The park was built in 1911 and covers a staggering 134,715 square yards (112,639 square meters). Amid the pretty landscaping, where flowers and a huge artificial lake create a tranquil countryside ambiance, are scenic spots and venues. Don’t miss afternoon tea on Goldfish Island, where views of the goldfish-filled waters and the park beyond are a truly special experience. Other teahouses, such as the Flower Water Teahouse, are dotted around the park and often host entertainers.

Appreciate the beauty of Rockery Square. Here, some 3,000 tons (2,721,554 kilograms) of rocks are piled high to create an impressive hill down which cascades a 39 feet (12 meter) waterfall. Paddle in the refreshing waters of Gold Water Stream as it flows 1,165 feet (355 meters) through the park. The stream is lined with pretty pebbles and is shaded by peach, willow and privet trees.

Head to the northwest corner of the park to see the Memorial to Railway Protection Movement. Erected to honor those who sacrificed themselves in the 1911 movement to prevent the selling of Chinese railways to foreign companies, it is an impressive 105-foot (32-meter) high construction. Notice the trains carved on its sides.

To experience one of the prettiest parts of the park, go in search of the colorful orchid garden where over 900 orchids are on display. Next door sits the Potted Landscape Garden, containing more than 200 potted plants including impressive bonsai.

Take the subway to People’s Park Station from which it is a short walk to the park. The park is open from early morning and closes at night. Entry is free unless there is a festival or flower show on such as the famous Chrysanthemum Show, which runs from October to November.
