The Pen-y-Dinas Hillfort is a tall grassy mound in the northwestern corner of Llandudno, where ancient fortresses once stood. Find the crumbling ruins of a set of ramparts that once stood here. Imagine the Iron Age people who once dwelled on this hill, where archaeologists have excavated animal bones, shells and the ruins of a large building. Ride the Llandudno Cable Car up to the hill’s summit, snapping photos of the pastoral terrain around you during the ascent. If you’re feeling energetic, you can walk along a trail up the steep hill instead.
Bring snacks and drinks on the trip up to the peak and find a nice spot on the grass for a picnic. Look down to see the Llandudno Pier and some of the historic sights in the town. On a clear day, spot the peak of Snowdonia in the far distance.
Embark on a hike with your family between the trees of the hilltop. Enjoy the absolute serenity and fresh air up here, away from modern urban development. Make sure to bring sufficient layers, as conditions on the mound can be windy and chilly.
The Pen-y-Dinas Hillfort overlooks Llandudno North Shore Beach in the northern outskirts of the town. Walk northwest from the town center for about 15 minutes to reach the cable car. You can also drive to the Llandudno Ski and Snowboard Centre’s parking lot at the back of the archaeological site. On the way, you’ll pass other sights, such as the Great Orme Tramway, the Bonkerz Fun Centre and the Home Front Experience.
