Once part of Pamplona’s grandiose defensive system, this church is revered for its chapel dedicated to the city’s patron saint.

From the outside, the Parroquia de San Lorenzo (St. Lawrence Parish) is a modest church located on the western border of Pamplona’s Old Town. Step inside and you’ll discover a striking interior famous for a chapel that honors St. Fermín and welcomes devotees in their droves. Visit the Parroquia de San Lorenzo to experience the spiritual activities of the city and to be part of vibrant events during the Fiesta of San Fermín.

The original church dates back to the 14th century and later became an integral part of the City Walls of Pamplona. It was rebuilt in the 18th century and marks one end of Calle Mayor, a palace-lined avenue and important commercial district that cuts through the heart of the Old Town. The façade of the church today displays elements of the neoclassical style and features a mix of narrow and circular windows in addition to a square-shaped bell tower. The building extends to one side with a series of arches.

The highlight of the interior is the elaborate neoclassical Chapel of San Fermín. Taking pride of place at the altar is a reliquary in the form of a silver-covered sculpture of St. Fermín. Icons of other saints decorate niches in the chapel walls. Look up to admire the intricate detail of the cupola, which allows natural light to illuminate the chapel.

Throughout the year the church is a focal point for worshippers who wish to pay their respects to the venerated saint. Come for the Fiesta of San Fermín to witness the biggest celebration. After the chupinazo (firework rocket) signals the start of the festival from Pamplona City Hall on July 6, officials dressed in ceremonial costumes walk to the church. The following day, the reliquary is paraded through the Old Town in front of thousands of adoring festival-goers.

Located in the Old Town, the church is within walking distance of several major city attractions. Parque de la Taconera is less than 5 minutes’ walk to the west while Plaza del Castillo is 10 minutes’ walk to the east.

The Parroquia de San Lorenzo is open daily and admission is free. Photography is allowed inside.
