Watch the world go by from a bench, spot statues and fountains and walk amid giant ficus trees at this popular meeting point.

Parque Canalejas is the oldest park in Alicante and one of this coastal city’s most romantic green areas, loved by locals and tourists alike. The cool breeze from the nearby marina passes through the park’s elegant squares and picturesque arboretum. Parque Canalejas takes its name from José Canalejas, a former prime minister of Spain. He played a key role in the modernization of Alicante’s port and public spaces.

Start your visit at Plaza de Canalejas, at the park’s northern end, where a monument commemorates the life of José Canalejas. Cross the street to a pedestrian boulevard guarded by statues of dogs set on pedestals and lined with street lamps. Benches provide a place for you to rest a while and enjoy views through gaps in the trees to the Port of Alicante. Admire the craftsmanship of a fountain that depicts a child playing a flute.

The boulevard continues through an area of impressive ficus trees, several with branches so heavy that they have to be held up by metal pillars. Have fun studying the curious shapes of branches that resemble elephant’s trunks. On a hot and sunny day you can experience the dramatic change in temperature when standing in the shade. Spot the two lion statues that mark a side entrance to this section of the park.

Get active by using the exercise stations and let the children burn off some energy at the playground. At the park’s southern end the ficus trees make way for a small plaza framed by tall palms and decorated with a bowl-shaped fountain. While loved for its serene ambiance, the park takes on a different atmosphere when it becomes a venue during Carnaval de Alicante. Held 40 days prior to Easter, this event features live music and extravagant street parades.

Centrally located, Parque Canalejas is a short walk from the port district. Metered parking is possible on the streets surrounding the park. The Explanada de Espana promenade connects with the park. Come here to shop for souvenirs, watch street performers and dine at tapas bars.
