When visiting Piazza Grande, it is impossible to miss this large white building, which actually divides Livorno’s central square in two.

Palazzo Grande is a monumental white structure that sits directly in the middle of Livorno’s main square, Piazza Grande. The piazza spans from the city’s town hall, Comune di Livorno, at its north end to the Duomo (Cathedral) at its south end. Visit the palazzo and square to witness Livorno’s history, enjoy an authentic Italian meal and indulge in some people-watching right in the heart of the city.

After much of Livorno’s Old Town was destroyed during World War II, the city center was reconstructed in a modern style. The plan was to split Piazza Grande into two separate areas and to rebuild a modern version of the Palazzo Granducale, a historic residence for visiting royalty that had been demolished in the war.

Work on the building commenced in 1950 and was completed in just two years. Note the façade and portico, which pay homage to the original palazzo. The rest of the building, however, is thoroughly modern.

To this day, the Palazzo Grande remains the subject of controversy. Many locals consider it to be an eyesore in an otherwise picturesque square. Observe the building and decide for yourself. Since its construction, it has served as a multipurpose space. Today, it holds conference spaces, offices and several galleries. Come here to admire works of art by local artists.

While you are in Piazza Grande, make sure you check out some of the many bars, cafés and shops lining the square. Browse for souvenirs, such as Italy’s famous leather shoes and handbags. Don’t miss sampling Livorno’s signature dish, cacciucco, a rich tomato stew cooked with various locally caught fish and shellfish. It is also close to the market, known for its fresh seafood, and the old port where you can enjoy scenic views as you walk along the harbor.

Palazzo Grande is located right in the middle of Livorno. It is easy to reach by bus and is a short walk from other sights, such as Fortezza Nuova.
