Palafrugell is a town in the province of Girona known for its pretty coves, so typical of the Costa Brava, and its rich cuisine. Make sure you’re wearing comfortable shoes and walk thecamins de ronda. These paths were commonly used by the police after the Civil War to monitor the maritime border and prevent smuggling. Nowadays they're a great way to get from beach to beach.
If you prefer mountains to beaches, then cheap trips to Palafrugell are also for you, as you’ll be close to the Gavarres Massif, a natural site spanning more than 28,000 hectares (70,000 acres) where you can enjoy the aroma of the pine trees and spot a wide variety of different birds. Another option are the Cap Roig Gardens, a botanical garden offering stunning views. Open-air concerts are often held there, so make sure to check the calendar.
Palafrugell also boasts a considerable collection of monuments. One highlight is the old Torre de Can Mario, a tower built at the beginning of the 20th century next to the cork factory of the same name. After the plant closed, the space was used to locate the Cork Museum, an educational space where you can learn all about the cork industry.
You can also visit the Torre de Sant Sebastià, which is another considerably older tower whose construction began in 1445. This tower with a semicircular floor plan served as a watch tower for years.
