An eclectic mix of styles and colors in this century-old building presents a whimsically ornate structure overlooking the sea.

Built between 1913 and 1917 for the wealthy merchant DonAcisclo del Valley Blanco, the Valle Palace is covered with decorative ornamentation inside and out. Come to the site to view the interesting architecture and enjoy refreshments on the rooftop terrace.

Del Valle was born in Spain and moved to Cuba late in his teens, quickly becoming a prominent trader and an important leader in the community of Cienfuegos. He hired theItalian architectAlfredo Colli to rebuild the home his father-in-law had given him and his wife. Unfortunately he enjoyed the building for just 2 years before he died at age 54 in 1919. See a bust of del Valle on the steps of the mansion.

Visit the structure today to appreciate the elements of whimsy incorporated into the design. You may be able to identify Baroque, Gothic, Italianate and Romanesque features. Notice several series of keyhole arches that are typical of Moorish architecture. The pastel exterior with green metalwork presents a pretty silhouette against the blue skies and ocean backdrop of the setting in Punta Gorda.

Step inside to admire imported adornments of Italian alabaster vases, Mexican Talavera tiles, Venetian ceramics, European crystal and a Carrara marble staircase. Look down to see decorative mosaics on the floors, up to see carved panels in the ceilings and out through colorful stained glass. Wander through the rooms on the two floors of living spaces to inspect the fine details.

Climb to the roof and look out of several towers of varied designs. Musicians sometimes play under an arbor next to a bar and restaurant. Have dinner or a cocktail at sunset overlooking the bay where del Valle enjoyed sailing.

Valle Palace is about 2 miles (3 kilometers) south of the center of Cienfuegos near La Punta, a pretty peninsula extending into Jagua Bay. The palace is open daily from mid-morning to late evening. You may have to pay admission during the day, but rooftop access for an evening meal or drinks is free.
