The Old Church, or “De Oude Kerk” in Dutch, is both the oldest building and oldest church in Amsterdam. The church is believed to have been founded around 1213 as a wooden chapel with reconstruction in brick and stone starting soon after. The church was consecrated by the Bishop of Utrecht as early as 1306.
Admire the exterior of this church and take in the details and lines of what was originally a Catholic house of worship. Glance around at the church’s home in Amsterdam’s historical De Wallen district, which is best known as Amsterdam’s Red Light District. Look for the bronze statue of Belle right in front of the church, which was placed there in honor of the prostitutes of the world.
Enter the church and admire the restrained, but elegant, interior of a church that was used by the more austere Calvinists that took over the church. Additions, changes and renovations throughout the church’s long life are still visible if you look closely. Also make sure to look up to admire the ancient paintings that adorn the large wooden roof.
Tread gently, as you will be walking on a floor constructed of the ledger stones and larger gravestones of some of the thousands of people buried within the church. Light from the beautifully detailed and massive stained-glass windows adds to the ethereal atmosphere of the church.
The church became a secular building in 1955 and opened as exhibition space and museum in 2016, after extensive renovations. The contemporary art exhibitions are designed to interact with, and highlight, the ancient features of the church. If you love music and theater, time your visit to catch one of the performances and concerts that are often held in the church. Despite no longer being an active house of worship, The Old Church still plays host to religious events on special occasions.
The Old Church (Oude Kerk) is centrally located in the cobblestoned laneways of De Wallen in central Amsterdam. The canal-side venue is best reached on foot or by bicycle.
