Oropesa is a town in the province of Toledo, in Castile-La Mancha. The name literally means “weight of gold”, and there are many theories to its origin. The most popular one from the time of Muslim occupation is when a maid was taken captive, to rescue her, the Templars had to pay her weight in gold. If you look at the shield of the town, you can see a woman holding a scales.
History and local legends are a mainstay of ourcheap trips to Oropesa. So, let’s get to it and visit the castle of Oropesa, built by the Arabs back in the 12th century on the site of a former Roman building. The place is very well preserved and, if you're looking for a moment of tranquillity, you won't want to leave it off your itinerary.
There are plenty of religious sights to be seen too: there’s the chapel of San Bernardo, considered by many to be the precursor of Spanish Baroque art, and the convent of the Misericordia, founded in 1618 to meet the educational needs of the town's female population. You won't want to miss the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, either.
