Learn about the Mayas and their impressive temples in one of their biggest cities. See crocodiles, spider monkeys and exotic birds here.

Orange Walk is a fascinating town of many cultures in an opening of the tropical rainforest. The nearby sandy beaches and clear Caribbean Sea of Corozal are perfect for a relaxing getaway. Inland, the New River is an old Mayan waterway. Climb on the temples to see intriguing art and remnants left behind by the Mayas in one of their most important cities.

Discover a blend of cultures in Orange Walk in the market, which starts in the morning. Purchase breakfast tacos from small carts in the town center. Later dine at charming restaurants, while appreciating the sounds and flavors of the town.

Visit the Banquitas House of Culture. Inspect artifacts in the temporary displays on archeology and art. Peruse the various exhibits about the area’s history and local commerce. Sugar, soybean and onions are among the homegrown produce items. Locals affectionately call the area Sugar City, due to the prominence of its former main trade.

Follow in the footsteps of the Mayas by taking a boat journey upriver to an ancient city where they made their civilization. A knowledgeable tour operator will explain the spiritual meaning behind each temple. Climb to the top of the 108-foot (33-meter) High Temple for excellent views of the rainforest and the river.

For a change of scenery, drive out to the beautiful beaches of Corozal, northeast of Orange Walk. Gaze up to appreciate the variety of colorful birds in the region more than 350 species have been sighted here.

The town is based in northern Belize, about an hour by taxi from the country’s major airport. Once here, travel around on foot between the market area and the main streets.

Orange Walk is a beautiful town near the rainforest. Take advantage of its access to the magnificent ruins of the Mayas. The region has a tropical climate, with a rainy season from June to November. The rest of the year is very dry and hot.
