Attend a classical or modern concert in one of Germany’s most prominent opera houses, or simply tour the building with a guide to take in its architecture. This impressive building’s design really is “wunderschön,” as the Germans would say.
The Staatsoper Hannover is renowned as an operatic leader in Germany and its season runs from September to June. The neoclassical Staatsoper building was built between 1845 and 1852 and designed by Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves, a local architect, civil engineer and urban planner.
Like so many historic buildings in Hannover, the Opera House was heavily damaged during World War II. However, it was rebuilt soon after the war, as early as 1948. The Staatsoper was completely remodeled in the late 20th century to improve its acoustics and modernize the stages.
Although the façade is neoclassical in design, the interior of the opera house is surprisingly modern, its stark white, tiled hallway with staircases leading visitors into the dark interior.
The Opera House doubles as a Concert Hall for other musical performances. Ballet shows are a regular item on the events calendar as well. See if you can get some tickets for a musical event during your stay in Hannover to enjoy an evening out in style.
Alternatively, join a tour to study the design in details together with a volunteer guide who can tell you all about its inception, renovation and current place in the operatic community of Germany.
