Alter Markt meaning "old market" is located in the centre of Cologne, just a few metres from the River Rhine. Close by is the city's main shopping centre and the square itself is overlooked by the City Hall.
Centuries ago, the site was originally a port, however after years of silt displacement it eventually completely filled in and became Cologne’s central marketplace. Here you would find outdoor markets, jousting tournaments and even public executions.
Today people come for the outdoor café terraces and open-air carnivals take centre stage. During December, thousands of visitors come to see the Christmas Markets with an ice-rink for skating, fairy lights decorating the city and food stalls lining the streets. Adults and children alike will enjoy the entertainment on offer from carousel rides to puppet theatre shows.
Traditional German architecture is evident in some of the monuments dedicated to Cologne's founders. A large fountain dominates the centre of the square. Built in 1884 it celebrates Jan von Werth, a triumphant army general. Detailed reliefs in the fountain tell the story of his rejection by Griet – a woman he had fallen in love with – for being a simple farm boy. Heartbroken, he joined the army. He returned years later married to a noblewoman and happened upon Griet who was now old and alone and full of regret.
A much more light-hearted sculpture adorns the facade of house No. 24. The Kallendresser is a bronze work of a man with his trousers down. It was created by sculptor Edwald Mataré in 1956 however its purpose is unknown. Due to its geographical positioning across directly across from City Hall, some think it to be a politically motivated statement.
If you’re taking the U-Bahn, the nearest stations to the Alter Markt are Heumarkt and Dom/Hauptbahnhof. It's also just a quick walk south of the Cologne Cathedral.
