Learn about the geological history of oil, how it was found in the North Sea and the importance of oil production safety precautions at this interactive museum.

Journey through the history of Scandinavian oil mining at the Norwegian Petroleum Museum. Built in 1999 next to the Stavanger quay, this museum was designed to look like an offshore petroleum mining rig. Learn about the history, tools and future of oil mining from films, galleries and interactive exhibits for kids.

Delve into the natural processes of oil formation at the History of the Earth exhibit, which explains geological processes with models and dioramas. Watch Petropolis, a 3-D documentary, to learn how carbon from prehistoric living tissue breaks down, producing fuel for modern combustion engines.

Admire the daunting size of the 35-inch-diameter (90-centimeter) Oil Well Drill Bit, which has jagged teeth to reach oil deposits deep below the sea bed. This 1.9-ton (1,700-kilogram) drill bit is one of the largest in the world. Head to the North Sea Divers exhibit to learn about Norway’s pioneers of deep sea exploration. Inspect models of diving bells and protective vessels they used to work on the seabed.

Watch films and see models recreating historic accidents in the offshore oil industry, which resulted in massive ecological damage and loss of life. Inspect a replica lifeboat from an oil rig, which can fit over 50 people, and watch safety procedures that are designed to prevent these accidents from happening again.

Jump down a replica escape chute for an exhilarating experience of life as an oil rig worker. Head to the kids’ corner to let the children join the crew on the museum’s drilling rig. Stop at the Petrorama to see a wide view of Norway’s oil history.

Before leaving, browse oil-themed souvenirs in the gift shop or have a sandwich at the Bølgen & Moi Museum Café. Arrange a guided tour available in either Norwegian or English.

The Norwegian Petroleum Museum is just a few minutes’ drive from downtown. Park on-site or use nearby public transportation services. The museum is open daily and there is an admission fee.
