"I stayed Friday- Monday.The breakfast buffet has options for everyone. There is not a microwave in the room and they will only provide one for $20. I personally was not paying $20 to warm up my food. Staff was very nice and informative upon arrival. "

"Within walking distance of Chinatown, I would suggest parking under the hotel and walking/getting rides everywhere. Parking at hotel is +$65 per day, but that’s just how SF is. Clean and well appointed room with a great view of Coit Tower. The adjoining city park has homeless people and smells of urine. Everything else nearby was pretty clean. "

"Check in process was great. The Inn is located in an excellent spot close to everything. Pack a small fan because if it is warm, your room will be warm. It’s very clean, but the bleach smell was overwhelming when we first walked in. The light breakfast is nice and thoughtful. "

"The shower head pipe was coming out of the wall and looked like a run down flea bag cheap motel. Embarrased. Hilton can do better. Charging $45 to park car was ridiculous as was providing coffee and then expecting me to pay for the water. Have stayed all over the world and always receive complimentary water for coffee."

"I love the portola! Only place I stay and travel almost monthly down to Monterey. The rooms are always clean, spacious, the beds are very comfy. Partial bay view is a must. Balcony has two chairs nice to enjoy ur coffee on or listen to some wildlife (sea lions). Basically 4 restaurants attached to the hotel, Carmel bakery n coffee inside the hotel. The location is prime! Walk right and head down Alvarado st you got ur breweries and 10-15 restaurants. Go left and you’re on the Monterey pier , 7 restaurants, a bunch of clothes ans candy shops and my favorite whale watching. I do every time and it’s so close to portola. "

"This is one of the worst hotels I've ever stayed in, hands down. Don't believe the gleaming reviews as they are likely left by people working for the hotel. Lets start with the fact that the hotel is in the hood and its not safe. Drunk and high people amble around the hallways and the elevator is not key-accessed, so they can come right up to your floor. The building is also not locked during the day so anyone can waltz right in. My first impression upon arrival and check-in was being accosted by a drunken homeless man who could barely stand, asking for cigarettes and/or money. When you get in your room, you'll likely be missing necessary items and things will be broken. In my case, I had no shower curtain and my TV remote didnt work. The hotel did NOTHING to fix this despite several requests, so I had to shower without a curtain and spill water everywhere. My TV was also stuck on the QVC channel for the entire trip, so it was useless. In terms of amenities, this hotel is ancient. There is no air conditioning. Theres an old-school iron space heater you have no control over. Be ready to open your window (and jump out) to cool down and hear the sounds of the homeless screaming and ambulences roaring down the street all night long. The linens are rough, stained, and old. The bed is hard as a rock. Everything creaks under your feet. The walls are paper-thin so expect to hear every conversation, scream, vomit sound, and sex sound.
