Take photos of the iconic old railroad bridge and camp in the cabins at the confluence of the Niobrara and Missouri rivers.

Spread across gorgeous terrain made up of undulating woodland and scenic bluffs, Niobrara State Park is an idyllic spot for camping and hiking. It is known for its decommissioned bridge and picturesque views of the Niobrara and Missouri rivers. Drive along the well-paved roads running through this park to get to know its layout and ecosystems.

Follow the maze-like hiking paths that meander through the forests. In total, the park has 14 miles (23 kilometers) of walkways. Supervised horseback rides are available on the trails. Stroll along the enchanting banks of the waterway at the point where the Missouri and Niobrara rivers meet. Go fishing or sit and relax beside the water.

On a sunny afternoon go for a swim in the park’s pool. Put together a picnic from snacks and drinks and enjoy lunch with your family at one of the designated shelters. In winter, cross-country skiing is among the popular activities here. Take photos of the disused Niobrara River Bridge that formerly served as a multi-span railroad link and dates back to 1929.

Put up a tent in a campground or stay overnight in your RV. The park also offers charming cabins that have excellent views of the river.

Note that the 1,640-acre (660-hectare) park and its cabins are open to the public year-round. Office hours are daily from morning until early evening, with shorter hours in winter. Certain activities have a fee.

Niobrara State Park is on the border with South Dakota, in the northeastern corner of Nebraska. Drive northwest from Omaha for 190 miles (306 kilometers) to arrive in a little more than 3 hours. Spend time at other main sights in the region, which include Talsma’s Trail Park, the Springfield Recreation Area and Santee Sioux Recreation Park.
