Visit the two buildings that make up the city’s municipal complex and relax in the pleasant garden in the center of this plaza.

Nilo Peçanha Square is a pleasant piazza in the core of Angra dos Reis. Surrounded by some of the city’s most important buildings, the plaza is a popular gathering point for visitors and locals. Sit for a while on one of the many benches beside the verdant patches of grass dotted around the square.

Read a book in the sunshine and watch people go by in this busy central hub. Snap photos of the impressive colonial structure containing Angra dos Reis City Hall on the northern side of the square. It has a whitewashed façade with three arched portals, many elegant square windows and a range of flags.

On the southern end of the piazza lies an accompanying section of the city hall, built in a similar whitewashed style. Browse the range of shops and cafés that crowd the eastern and western sides of the square. Enjoy the serenity amid the tropical vegetation adorning the square and stroll along the paved paths. Gaze up at the emerald forests decorating the mountains that loom behind the plaza.

Branch off and explore the narrow alleys that give Angra dos Reis its charm. Browse the boutiques and stores in this commercial zone. Head north to find the Federal Courthouse and Osvaldo Afonso College.

A little southeast, you’ll encounter Our Lady of Lapa Parish and the Lapa. Nearby, the Boa Morte Church contains a museum of ecclesiastical artifacts and artworks. Relax in nearby Zumbi Square, recognizable by its cobbles and central statue.

Nilo Peçanha Square is several blocks inland from the Port of Angra dos Reis, in the center of the city. Take a bus to one of the stops in the area or walk here from the shoreline. See nearby sights, such as the Bica da Carioca open-air museum, the Teophilo Massad Theater and the Plaza of the Port.
