Climb to Mexico’s fourth-highest peak, hike around glacial lakes and traverse mountain trails by foot or bike in this jaw-dropping national park.

Gear up for thrilling adventures amid the spectacular landscapes of Nevado de Toluca National Park (Parque Nacional Nevado de Toluca). Trek to the summit of soaring mountains and enjoy far-reaching views of snowcapped peaks. The park spreads across a protected area of 126,000 acres (51,000 hectares). Discover tranquil lakes by bike, horseback and foot and go scuba diving, skiing and wildlife spotting.

The dormant Nevado de Toluca Volcano (Xinantécatl) dominates the park. At over 15,400 feet (4,700 meters), it is the country’s fourth-tallest mountain. Treks lead to two summits on the volcano’s crater rim and present memorable panoramas of the park. On clear days you can see as far as the mountain ranges of Oaxaca and Veracruz. Take the day hike to Pico de Aguila or challenge the longer trek to the Pico del Fraile.

Inside the crater are two lakes: Lago del Sol and Laga de la Luna. Walk, bike or ride on horseback along the natural paths that encircle the lakes. Marvel as clouds and snowy peaks reflect perfectly in the calm water. Spot wildlife such as birds, coyotes, rabbits, reptiles and squirrels.

Arrive between November and March for the chance to ski on cross-country and downhill tracks. Cerro Cacalotepec, Cerro La Calera, Cerro San Antonio and Gordo Volcano all have skiing facilities. Go scuba diving in the lakes and brave the ice-cold waters considered sacred by the indigenous Matlatzinca people. This is recommended only for those with experience diving at high altitudes.

The park is open year-round, although it may close due to heavy snowfall. Simple lodges and campgrounds provide choices for overnight accommodations. Bring warm clothing and be prepared for extreme temperature changes throughout the year.

Nevado de Toluca National Park is about a 1-hour drive southwest of Toluca. A paved road connects the entrance with the crater. Arrange organized tours at the tourism agencies in Toluca. Day tours also operate from Mexico City.
