This former residence of bishop princes from the Renaissance era has a Baroque garden, an open-air theater and a nature museum and art gallery in its former stables.

Follow the Pader River from its source in Paderborn to where it meets the Lippe River to admire Neuhaus Castle (Schloss Neuhaus). While formal receptions and classical music concerts still take place in the hall of mirrors, the castle is not usually open to the public. However, the garden and museum spaces of this former castle are a joy to explore, especially combined with a cultural event in the Neuhaus Castle Open Air Theatre.

Neuhaus Castle is one of the most significant early examples of the Weser-Renaissance architecture of the region. Once the residence of prince-bishops of the Diocese of Paderborn, Neuhaus was first mentioned in 1016. The castle continued to be redeveloped until the 16th century, eventually looking much like the grand building that you see today.

These days, the former castle is part of a college. Each door of the grand building is a work of art, with sculptures, paintings and lettering surrounding the portals. Visit at night to see the illuminated round corner spires of the four-winged castle reflected in the moat.

The Baroque manicured lawn, pond and flower beds were recreated from 18th-century drawings of the castle grounds. Time your visit with one of the events held in the Neuhaus Castle Open Air Theatre. From May to October, attend the Schlosssommer (Summer in the Palace) events in the gardens. Another highlight is the annual Biergarten weekend, with German beers served on long tables, street food stalls and live music.

The exhibits of the adjacentStaedtische Galerie (City Gallery) in the “Reithalle" will appeal to art lovers. Also visit the Natural History museum situated in the “Marstall,” the former stables of the castle. Discover the geology, flora and fauna of the Paderborner Land, as the region is known, and let the children play and learn in the on-site Kids’ Museum, which is free for kids up to 12 years old.

Stroll to the nearby Schloss und Auenpark parklands with restaurants and family-friendly attractions. From there, follow the green axis along Boke Canal to Lippe Lake.

To get to the castle without a car it’s a 15-minute bus journey from the Paderborn city center. The parklands and gardens are free to explore.
