Climb, or take the funicular railway, to the top of this gorgeous mountain, where striking views, scenic trails and a beautiful church await.

Spend a day exploring the many delights found at the top of the mountain of Neroberg. In addition to the wonderful views of Wiesbaden and picturesque walking trails that you would expect, you will also find a wide variety of more unexpected attractions here. These include an opulent Russian Orthodox Church and a pretty outdoor swimming pool. The journey to the top is a treat in itself, too. Get there on foot or relax aboard the charming, old-fashioned funicular railway, called the Nerobergbahn in German.

Neroberg has long offered an easy escape into nature for residents of Wiesbaden. Ride in one of the pretty yellow carriages that follow the funicular railway line and you will be taking the same route day-trippers have used for well over a century. The railway first opened in 1888 and is powered by an unusual system. The carriage heading downhill is loaded up with water to increase its weight, which makes its pull powerful enough to drag the other carriage uphill at the same time. Bring your camera and take beautiful photos of the historic city of Wiesbaden spreading out below as you ascend.

At the top of the mountain, seek out some of the attractions that make a trip here so special. Set off to the east and you will soon reach the Opelbad. This heated outdoor swimming pool first opened in 1934, and it is still every bit as elegant as it was in its heyday. Set amid beautiful landscape and offering exceptional views, it is the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon.

A little further to the east is the spectacular Russian Orthodox Church. Look for its glistening golden domes as you approach. The building’s dramatic mountaintop location only adds to its striking appearance. Take some time to wander the atmospheric Russian cemetery attached to it, too.

Take the funicular railway to the top of Neroberg and save your energies for walking the lovely forested nature trails that wind across the summit. The train ride takes less than 5 minutes.
