Explore a world of lights, color and style at this quirky homage to the neon lights of communist-era Warsaw located in the SOHO Factory complex.

See the design, skill and flare that went into making the illuminated signs that adorned many Warsaw businesses from the 1960s and 1970s at the Neon Muzeum. Being just a small museum in Warsaw’s trendy SOHO Factory complex, the quirky museum offers an alternative experience and shines a light on Polish culture.

Before you enter the museum, take a look at the brick building with some iconic neon signs out front, including the former sign of the Warszawa Wschodnia (Warsaw East Station). The SOHO Factory is located in an early 20th-century industrial precinct that is now being rejuvenated and pegged to become one of Warsaw’s new trendy cultural hubs.

Inside, browse the displays of neon lights in many different shapes, sizes and colors. Many of the finest examples are prominently mounted and lit up to full effect.

Learn how the neon signs became a prominent feature during the Cold War, the post-Stalin years of communism. The signs were hung throughout the city as part of the “great neonization.” The bright shop signs sent a message of economic prosperity and cultural expansion rather than simply being effective methods of business advertising like elsewhere in Europe.

Because of their symbolic value, the art of neon sign making in Poland was taken seriously. Many signs were designed by renowned artists, architects and graphic designers of the time. Many one-off, original signs have become collector’s items, especially when they come from iconic buildings.

After your visit, try to spot still existing neon signs in the city, remembering the different styles and designs that you learned to appreciate while in the museum.

The Neon Museum is open daily except Tuesdays. Check its website for the opening times, which vary per day. Private viewings can be arranged and guided tours are available too. Entry fees and tour fees apply. The museum shop sells colorful and artistic mementos of your visit. To get to the Soho Factory building, take the tram to the Bliska stop or drive here and park on site for free.
