Nazare Beach featuring a sandy beach, surf and general coastal views

Surfers and sun worshippers are drawn to the golden sands, great restaurants and big waves of this popular beach, located in a pretty historic town.

Nazaré Beach is the perfect place to unwind, whether you enjoy getting active at the beach or just want to read your book and work on your tan. Come to this lovely crescent-shaped stretch of sand to surf the lively waves or to watch your kids build castles on the clean yellow sand. In the evening, enjoy a meal at one of the great restaurants nearby.

Bring or rent a surfboard and experience the impressive waves that have made the beaches of Nazaré famous. World-renowned surfer Garrett McNamara brought the area great fame by surfing on a record-breaking 100-foot (30-meter) wave off nearby North Beach. Expect big waves here at Nazaré Beach too, especially toward the northern end of the beach. However, the waters here are more suited to those who are new to surfing. Take lessons and rent all the equipment you need at a local surf school.

Take time out from the waves to browse the souvenir and handicraft stores that have sprung up near the coast. Eat at one of the restaurants nearby. Taste seafood straight from the ocean and be sure to sample some caldeirada à Nazarena. This local specialty is a flavorsome fish stew that makes use of the fresh ingredients offered by the sea.

In the town of Nazaré itself, wander old-fashioned narrow streets and admire the picturesque red-roofed buildings. Spot fisherwomen in traditional layered skirts and wooden clogs. See how many of the customs of the past have been carefully preserved in this charming place. Although it is a popular tourist spot, the town still remains more authentic than some of Portugal’s other coastal destinations.

If you are staying in Nazaré you will find hotels and other accommodations along Nazaré Beach, as this is the most popular place for tourists to stay. However, it is also possible to drive from Lisbon in around 90 minutes, making this beach an ideal choice for a daytrip. Come in the summer months to enjoy long daylight hours and outdoor drinks in the balmy evening.
