This impressive castle-like monument is amultipurpose cultural center that hosts art exhibitions, a film festival andconcerts by well-known performers.

TheNational Palace of Culture is one of Sofia’s most recognizable landmarks and anexcellent cultural and entertainment center. Here, you can admire modern fortress-likearchitecture, visit art exhibitions and enjoy live music events. The NationalPalace of Culture opened in 1981 to commemorate the 1,300th anniversary of theBulgarian state.

Checkout the cultural center’s dominant hexagonal structure, which resembles acontemporary castle. Step inside the building to discover 13 exhibition hallsand several restaurants spread over eight floors. Decorating the halls is acollection of murals, mosaics and sculptures, many of which portray historicalfigures and events and were created by Bulgarian artists.

Concertsby national and international artists take place in the main hall, which has acapacity for over 3,500 spectators. Previous performers include Andrea Bocelli,Bob Dylan, James Brown and Toto. In December, the center hosts Sofia’s New YearMusic Festival, with classical, orchestral and operatic music events. Go to theArt Gallery to see art displays that range from touring exhibitions fromSofia’s National Art Gallery to exhibitions about World War I.

Visitin November to catch the Cinemania film festival. Watch a large program of premierefilms by revered directors. Some screenings offer free entrance to children.

Dineat one of the restaurants and bars located in the cultural center, or bring apicnic to enjoy among the tall trees, flowerbeds and ornamental fountains inBulgaria Square, which fronts the building.

TheNational Palace of Culture is about a 20-minute walk from Sofia’s city center. Itis easily reachable via metro, bus, trolleybus and a city sightseeing bus. Thereis an onsite parking lot and metered parking is also available on the streetssurrounding Bulgaria Square. Combine your visit with a walk along VitoshaBoulevard, Sofia’s principal shopping street.
