Get used to the overpowering odor of sulfur in this unearthly place, where steam hisses, mud bubbles and hot water accumulates.

The steamy jets and barren hills of Námafjall are reminiscent of an apocalyptic scene from a movie. Some compare the experience to walking on a distant planet, due to its strong smell of sulfur and lack of any vegetation. Spot the many fumaroles and bubbling mud pits that give this region its otherworldly character.

Capture photos of the extraordinary terrain in this region and note the various colors of the sulfur crystals in the ground. It may take some time to get used to the eggy smell of the chemical composition.

Take care around the boiling steam that rises from jets that are partially covered by rocks. Watch the mud pools, known as solfataras, which fizz with relentless energy from below the surface. Marvel at the sheer size of some of these large mud craters. Hear the hiss of the smoking fumaroles.

Notice the various colors of sulfur minerals and the lack of vegetation on the barren landscape. This is due to the high temperatures and levels of sulfur in the atmosphere. The ground is acidic and infertile.

In addition to mud pits and vapor jets, large pools of steamy geothermal water decorate the desolate area. Enjoy the views of snow-capped mountains dotted along the horizon, which are a sharp contrast to the stark ground of Námafjall.

Gaze up at the imposing Námafjall Mountain in the distance. Follow the hiking trail up to the volcanic giant’s peak.

A power plant west of the site harnesses the geothermal springs of the area to create energy.

Námafjall is 3 miles (5 kilometers) east of Mývatn Lake. It is just off the main road that circles the northern tip of the lake. The nearest major landmarks are the Mývatn Natural Baths and the hot springs of Hverarönd, which are both a short walk away. There is also a parking lot with ample spaces.
