Hike over scenic dunes, paddle in the lake or go wild for winter adventure sports at this beloved nature park.

Muskegon State Park is a local favorite for beachside camping, scenic hiking and winter sports. Enjoy its expansive greenery, which measures over 1,200 acres (500 hectares) and overlooks both Lake Michigan and Muskegon Lake. With numerous trails and facilities for a vast range of outdoor activities, this park offers plenty of charm and stimulation.

Take your time to explore the dunes, ponds, forests and fields of the parklands. Follow 12 miles (19 kilometers) of marked hiking trails across the landscape, a dynamic expanse of sand nestled between two lakes.

If you are feeling ambitious, try the Dune Ridge Trail, which loops for 4 miles (6 kilometers) through some of the park’s most scenic features. At Devil’s Kitchen, a marshy bay by the Snug Harbor day-use area, onrushing wind can sometimes swirl the mist up off the water, creating an impression of an evil potion being brewed by somebody sinister.

On the Lake Michigan side, look for a replica historic fort blockhouse overlooking the water and dunes. Head to the shore for a chance to swim at a clean accessible beach. Dogs are allowed on the beach, a boon for your four-legged friend. In warmer weather, take advantage of the fishing piers and the boat launch.

In the cooler months, however, winter sports reign supreme. Ski over 5 miles (8 kilometers) of lighted trails for all levels of cross-country skiers. Try something quite different, the luge in the Winter Sports Complex. Alternatively, simply enjoy the atmospheric mix of sand, snow and ice by the shores of a lake.

Get a deeper appreciation of the atmosphere and scenery by camping at one of the park’s campgrounds. Over 200 modern and semi-modern campsites are available, as are a couple of mini-cabins. Book in advance to ensure your spot.

Muskegon State Park is located 4 miles (6 kilometers) west of North Muskegon. Pick up trail maps online or at the park and campground offices. Restrooms are available within the park, as are other day-use facilities. Purchase an annual or day-use pass for entry.
