Cologne’s Museum of Applied Art (Museum für Angewandte Kunst Koln), otherwise known as MAKK, is home to some exquisite pieces of medieval, Renaissance and Baroque artefacts. However it is the extensive collection of contemporary design pieces that is the museum's biggest attraction. You are guided through the history of art and design throughout centuries with accompanying descriptions to each display. A timeline of world events allows the visitor context in which to appreciate the pieces and understand the inspiration behind their creation.A wide variety of craftsmanship is represented by artists, goldsmiths, jewellers, photographers and graphic designers. Stunning displays made of glass, porcelain and ceramics are also on show, as well as a contemporary exhibition including architecture, fashion and technology.Over in the product design section you will notice many functional household items of historical relevance. For example Soviet-era radios, Eames chairs and even Tiffany glass creations to name but a few. Mies van der Rohe designed a chair that sits alongside a 1970s television and a retro vacuum cleaner. With so many fascinating exhibits and displays it is easy to spend a day at the museum. There is a small café serving snacks and beverages and also a gift shop where you can buy replica design objects as well as posters and books. The museum tends not to be very busy especially during the week, which is good to know if you want to admire the work in peace and quiet.Sometimes there are touring exhibitions, which may incur an additional admission fee. The museum is closed on Mondays. It is advised to refer to the official website for current details on exhibitions, opening hours and pricing before visiting.MAKK is within walking distance from Cologne Cathedral and the nearest U-Bahn station is Dom/Hauptbahnhof. If you are travelling by car, there is a pay car park underneath the cathedral.
