"We booked the hotel the day of the trip as we had change plans due to Typhoon Haishen. When we entrance to the hotel was blocked with a rope and they did not answer the phone. There was noone to get any information, we did not get a cancellation or a notification. We were left in the typhoon with nowhere to go and struggled to find anything for hours during when the weather got really bad. We had to drive under fallen trees, get out of the car to pull branches off road and hide in someone’s...

"Very special property that we loved. We stayed in January and esp loved the onsen and subfloor heating. Check in was easy enough because there was the option of online pre-registration. The road to the house was windy but not too bad - note that the GPS in the rental car may not show you the way. We used Google maps and got there without difficulty. We were thankful to have a 4WD and snow tires, because there was ice on parts of the road. Highly recommend the place!"

"There are many different choices of onsens in the ryokan. The staff are excellent as well, their english proficiency is one of the best I’ve seen as well. Although there were some incidents at the start when we check in, the staffs are very efficient at dealing with it. Overall I’ll recommend anyone who visits Kurokawa onsen to give this ryokan a try"

"Everything about Nihon No Ashitaba was so incredibly beautiful, serene, and thoughtful. They offer a free shuttle everyday to Yufuin station where you can walk, shop, eat, and enjoy Yufuin. We were greeted promptly after riding the Yufuin No Mori from Hakata Station.They have multiple private onsens and a large open air hot spring you can reserve a time everyday if you wanted. Amazing hotel, amazing area.

"A beautiful place to stay in beautiful surroundings. Hiroki-san took great care of us from the beginning, explaining everything and serving our meals. He was very kind, patient with my attempts at speaking Japanese, and welcoming. The riverside room had an amazing view in the autumn. There were so many onsen to choose from, shared outdoor ones and six private ones, easily accessed. Extremely relaxing. The food was kaiseki style - many, many dishes. Absolutely delicious dinner and breakfast. The Kurokawa Onsen area is full of charm. We particularly enjoyed a local shop run by a man who makes pottery. He explained how they make the white glaze from a local plant. There are more onsen that you could possibly visit, but other than Yamabiko, I highly recommend the cave onsen at Shinmeikan and the beautiful outdoor one at Ikoi Ryokan (bear in mind I’ve only seen the men’s sections)."

"This place was so cute and so much fun! It was a very relaxing weekend thanks to the staff and the cats. The establishment is cash only and you pay ¥1,000 yen per day for cat cafe access. Each morning your cat treats are restocked and you are left with a little snack as well to enjoy while playing with the cats. I will admit, the road to the hotel is a little rough, but that is bo flaw to the establishment. The staff are very kind, attentive, and accomodating. The room was also spacious and beautiful. I hope one day I may go back."

We were greeted promptly after riding the Yufuin No Mori from Hakata Station.They have multiple private onsens and a large open air hot spring you can reserve a time everyday if you wanted. Their breakfast and dinner is absolutely amazing and gives you a truly genuine Japanese food experience. The villas/homes on the property are tradition style and are very spacious and clean. The landscape of the property is quiet and offers you a peaceful onsen experience. The best part about Nihon No Ashitaba is the impeccable service and generosity of their staff. Yuji in particular, really cared for us and worked hard to make our stay the best experience ever! Thank you so much for the wonderful time in Yufuin!"
