Hike up a picturesque summit overlooking a stunning Arctic landscape, ski down challenging slopes and keep an eye out for the northern lights at this superb resort.

Mount Dundret is a mountain and ski resort, located 62 miles (100 kilometers) above the Arctic Circle. Also known as Thunder Mountain, the summit is 2,700 feet (823 meters) high and features dramatic vistas of the surrounding area. Look out over the scenic Laponia World Heritage Site and beyond to Sweden’s highest mountain, Kebnekaise. Enjoy snowmobiling and skiing in the winter and hiking and biking in the summer.

The resort features six lifts and a long ski season that stretches from the end of October to the beginning of May. Enjoy the resort’s well-groomed downhill slopes and the wide cross-country ski fields of Hellnerstadion. Go snowboarding, dog sledding or snowmobiling.

If you’re lucky and time your visit accordingly, you might get a glimpse of the breathtaking northern lights. The mountain is also an ideal place for viewing the midnight sun between June and July. Find a spot at the café set on the mountain summit and savor coffee or sweet waffles while admiring the views. Join a midnight hiking tour and trek to the summit with a small group.

To make the most of Mount Dundret’s abundant sunshine, explore the area on foot or by bike. A variety of hiking trails start just outside the hotel areas in Gällivare. Alternatively, drive to the top of the mountain and walk around the beautiful summit. Summer is also an ideal time for fishing in the area’s freshwater streams.

When you’re ready for a meal, head to the resort’s restaurant, Vinbaren, which specializes in Northern Swedish fare. The resort also features a supermarket, where you can stock up on essentials, as well as a nightclub.

Mount Dundret is a 5-minute drive south of Gällivare town center, 8 miles (13 kilometers) from Gällivare Lapland Airport. Small groups staying at the resort can arrange free transfers from the airport.

Whether you visit in summer or winter, Mount Dundret is a year-round outdoor enthusiasts’ paradise.
