Advertising borderline deception; a private room in a house. House has a large welcoming sign with picture of a lot of cats. No one present to open door at checkin time. Contacted owner by phone and told her my wife is very allergic to cats and has seizures. No prior message about cats in home. Requested a refund was repeatedly denied. DO NOT RECOMMEND.

Mr Jones, you were sent messages on each of the three days preceding your arrival date requesting an ETA which you rudely ignored. On the day of your arrival, I left to run an errand at the post office and as luck would have it, you showed up ten minutes after I left. I suppose you would have expected that I put my life on hold and wait around for 24 hours, just in case you were to arrive at any non-specified moment. As instructed on my messages to you, in the uncommon event that I am not home to greet you, you are instructed to call for a front door code, which you did do when you arrived 15 minutes prior to the earliest possible check in time of 3 pm. You were promptly given the door code and instructed that I was on my way back. You were not even at the property two minutes before calling again to say that you were not going to stay because your wife is deathly allergic to cats. Perhaps you should have inquired to the possibility of cats being present on the property before booking or logically determined that in a property that advertises as "pet friendly" there may be pets. I am sorry that your failures (which you admitted to me on the recorded phone conversation) caused you any disappointment or inconvenience.

NOT A HOTEL - BEDROOM IN A PRIVATE HOME

Posted 27 May 2024 on Hotels
This is not a hotel. This is a small bedroom in a private home. I often stay in short term residential rentals, so I don’t typically have an issue with that, but that wasn’t what I was looking for on this occasion. It was never made clear in the listing that this was a home, and the photos provided are misrepresentative of the space. Also, there are multiple cats in the residence so if you are bothered by cat dander be aware. While not overpowering, there is also a noticeable “cat smell” in the home. The owner was pleasant enough and generally helpful, still I felt deceived. Coming off of several very long arduous days on a work project, my schedule was suddenly extended by a day. This was not the experience I was looking for.

Peter, It sounds like you were having a bad day. I am sorry if my numerous attempts to accommodate your needs fell short of your expectations. I am sorry if the free (no quarters required) laundry services, free Gain laundry detergent, and fabric softener or the real Oneida silverware that I provided, that you would not get in a hotel, did not make you happy. You are correct, it is a house just like the listing says. "Colonial guest house" is what Expedia/hotels.com calls it at the top of the listing. I am also listed as "pet friendly" so the fact that I have pets/cats should not shock anyone. The cats are very clean and well behaved and usually disappear when guests are present. I keep a super clean house, you know there was not one cat hair in your room, so dander is not an issue. It surprises me that you mention a mild but noticeable cat smell in the house because the cats have their own double-walled weatherproof cat door to the garage where their litter boxes are located, far from your room upstairs and behind two different doors. Perhaps it was a psychological smell considering you were tired, having a bad day, and had encountered pets that you had not anticipated. Sometimes the brain can play tricks on us and connect our senses, sight and smell. I hope you have recovered from your bad day and I hope future days and future trips will bring you happiness and satisfaction.

THIS IS NOT A HOTEL!

Posted 5 Jun 2023 on Hotels
The title tells it all. While on Hampton Road and called Hampton House, this is a bedroom in a private home. Managing expectations is something I have been able to draw from Hotels.com but this entry showed us pictures of rooms we could only walk through and in a condition which was not reality. Our bedroom space was clean, decorated well, comfortable for sleeping and included access to an electronic light control. It seemed to us to be a more apt Airbnb entry than one for Hotels.com. Any issues we had came from being totally surprised to pull into a neighborhood and find our stay would be at a private home. Since this was not a hotel per se there was no lobby so there was no place to obtain drinks (other than water) or snacks. We needed to adjust our off-site plans when we realized what limitations we would have. Also, there are five cats living there and even though not "allowed" in guest rooms, their dander did bother my allergies until I left the space. Laura is a lovely woman and made us feel welcome but I have long had over met expectations from Hotels.com and have never been confused by any stay until this one. Just thought you should know.

At Hampton House I strive to offer all the comforts of home. I'm sorry you were disappointed with the unavailability of the usual overpriced snacks that some hotels offer but as I'm always trying to improve, I have decided to Implement a new policy where I will offer FREE in- room snacks to my guests as well as various coffee choices delivered to your room in the morning at a time you can specify on an order slip which you will clip on your door, also free. If you have any more suggestions on how to make Hampton House a better home away from home, shoot me a text, I'm all ears.

Home away from home

Posted 23 Jan 2023 on Hotels
I've stayed at Laura's property a few times now, and every time, I feel more like a family member than like a guest. I am going through some extreme hardships, and Laura spent time with me and we talked about things. It really made me feel better about everything bad that's going on. Even if she hadn't spend time in conversation with me, the single room that I've stayed in is *impeccable* and the bed is so cozy. I'll admit, I'm *moderately* famous, and I have a few stalkers, so I feel safer at her house than at my own, sometimes. Thank you, Laura, for being a beacon of kindness when I really needed one. Hot tip: The upstairs bathtub is LIT!!!!!!!!!!!!! -ET
