Monte Urgull

As well as lavish vegetation and panoramic views, this beautiful mountain has historic buildings that played an important role in the history of the city.

The famous Monte Urgull (Urgull Mountain) is located by the sea, at the heart of San Sebastián. It is 404 feet (123 meters) high and is a very popular spot among both locals and tourists. Explore the mountain to see a beautiful castle, an impressive and huge Jesus monument, several chapels and other interesting buildings that were once part of an important fortress to protect the city.

Find the Castillo de la Mota (Mota Castle) at the top of the beautiful Monte Urgull. The construction of this fantastic castle was ordered by Spanish King Sancho VII from Navarre, to defend the town from possible foreign attacks. The king also ordered the construction of protective walls, the remains of which are still visible in certain parts of the mountain. Around the Mota Castle look for old cannons used during the several wars that took place in the region. Visit this interesting castle to learn about the great history of the city and to enjoy spectacular views.

Discover the chapels at the top of the Monte Urgull. One of them has a monument dedicated to the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús (Jesus Sacred Heart), also called Cristo de la Mota (Mota Christ). Notice the amazing concrete statue of Jesus by the architect Pedro Muguruza and the well-known sculptor Federico Coullaut-Valera. It was created in 1950 and is about 41 feet (12.5 meters) high.

While you are on Monte Urgull stop at the Casa de la Historia (History House). This is a great museum to learn about the city of San Sebastián, its military past and the lives of its inhabitants throughout many centuries. Observe many interesting objects, photos and entertaining exhibits with audio and images.

Enjoy the green vegetation and the panoramic views of Monte Urgull. Find important historic sites that will help you discover San Sebastián’s exciting present day and its rich history.
