Two impressive cable cars provide access to a restaurant, a gift shop and a planetarium at the top of a mountain.

The Moiwa Ropeway is an innovative cable car system that takes passengers from the foothills of Moiwa Mountain to a station near its peak. The upper terminal has a quaint mini car that continues the journey to conquer this national monument. Enjoy the experience of riding these exceptional transportation systems to the top of the mountain.

Climb aboard the aerial lift in the station at the base of the mountain. As you begin to rise, appreciate the changing perspective of the city center of Sapporo. You’ll soon reach a point with views extending across much of Hokkaidō Island. Begin snapping photos of these impressive vistas, made all the more stunning in winter, when the city is covered in a thick layer of snow.

Reach the transfer station about three-quarters of the way up the mountain and breathe in the fresh mountain air. Enter the smaller cable car at this spot and continue the last part of the journey up to the mountain’s peak. Here, you’ll find The Jewels, an exclusive restaurant, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the awe-inspiring mountaintop views.

Practice your photography skills from the observation deck at sunset, capturing the city below you, before it turns into a labyrinth of bright lights at night.

Bring your family to the planetarium and theater at the summit. In winter, rush down the slopes of Mount Moiwa Ski Resort, on the southeastern part of the mountain, with a separate access.

Note that the ropeway works from late morning until late evening year-round. There are separate fees for round trips on each of the two cable cars.

The Moiwa Ropeway lies in the southwestern corner of Sapporo, in the southwestern part of Hokkaidō Island. Ride the Sapporo Shiden tram from the city center to the Ropeway Iriguchi Station and walk west for a few minutes to reach the cable car.

Explore the surrounding area for treasures such as Asahiyama Memorial Park, the Sapporo Fushimi Inari Shrine and Nakajima Park.
