The arboretum was originally conceived to discover which plants could survive the harsh Northern climate. Today, these stunning gardens are part of the University of Minnesota. The variety of community schemes organised within the park are a testament to its commitment to sustainability.

A good place to start is the Oswald Visitor Centre or alternatively you can download a map of the area from the arboretum's website. People flock to Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in every season, as each one has its own unique landscape.

Wander along the Three-Mile-Drive admiring the cultivated greenery and luscious plant life as you go. Make sure to see the Edo Period-inspired Japanese Garden, complete with waterfall and tower. If you don’t have time to do it on foot, don't worry, you can drive along the path from April to November. Another option is to take the narrated Arboretum Trumpet Creeper tour, or catch the Winter Wonder bus, which operates during the winter months. If you're up for a challenge why not bring the sled or skis along and make use of the designated tracks there.

The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is open every day apart from Thanksgiving and Christmas however it closes at sunset. Facilities include a learning centre, library, gift shop and restaurant. Kids under 13 get in for free and there are lots of offers for adults so keep an eye on the website for current information.
