Nestled on the banks of the Mississippi River, Minnehaha Park is a popular place for both locals and tourists to come and relax, no matter what time of year you visit. During the warmer seasons you will find the park full of people going for a picnic, taking a dip in the pools or simply laying back and watching the world go by. In winter low temperatures see the waterfall freeze and the snow-covered park becomes a great spot for sledding or a snowball fight!Without doubt the waterfall is one of the highlights of this picturesque park. It was made famous by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in 1855 when he mentioned it in a poem he composed. Originally discovered in 1820 by European settlers, Minnehaha Park's name itself is inspired by the waterfall as Minnehaha means "falling water". During winter the entire waterfall freezes over and the 16-metre icicles are a magnificent sight to behold. If you're feeling energetic why not explore the park with a hike along one of the many trails. If you head towards the junction of Mississippi River and Minnehaha Creek you will be rewarded with a beautiful sandy beach, perfect for a mid-hike break. There is also the option of renting a bike to explore more of the park should you wish.It is a great spot during the summer with a swimming pool and changing rooms for those wishing to take a dip, while kids will love the playground too. If you’re here for the day, make use of the picnic tables and bring your lunch along with you. If you visit during the summer make sure to catch some of the free open-air concerts held here every weekend. Winter sees heavy snowfall so pack up that sled and hit the slopes!Minnehaha Park is located between St. Paul and Minneapolis and is free to enter, however you will have to pay for parking.
