Bring your family to swim laps and enjoy the sun in these two pools filled with saltwater delivered by ocean waves.

Merewether Ocean Baths is a complex with a couple of large swimming pools made up of saltwater from the Pacific Ocean. It is in a stunning region of mossy cliffs at the southern end of Merewether Beach. Relax in the water and watch the waves crashing into the rocks along the shoreline.

Sunbathe beside the pool to work on your tan. Sit on one of the benches and allow the ocean waves to creep up and lap your feet. Work on your fitness by swimming laps in the giant pool. Let your kids play in the children’s pool, which has a large shallow area.

Stay into the afternoon and capture photos of the changing hues of the sky over the ocean. The water is usually a little warmer later in the day, dependent upon the external temperature.

Bring snacks and drinks for a picnic on one of the designated tables and relax in the sheltered areas. Be sure to slather on sun cream throughout the day and wear a hat to shield your face from the sun.

The site has changing rooms with a hot shower as well as several cold showers. Enjoy a small meal and refreshments at the café, with an excellent view of the cliffs and the ocean pools. Embark on a stroll along the adjacent Merewether Beach and beachcomb for marine treasures, such as shells.

Note that lifeguards patrol the ocean baths daily in summer. Ocean pools have been part of an important tradition on the Australian coastline since the early 19th century. The Merewether Ocean Baths were constructed in 1935.

Use the pools, which are open 24 hours a day, for free. They are only closed for cleaning. Find the maintenance schedule online.

The Merewether Ocean Baths is in the southeastern part of Newcastle, just south of Newcastle East. Ride a bus to one of the many stops crowding the southern end of Merewether Beach. Visit nearby sights, such as Murdering Gully, Glenrock Lagoon and Dixon Park.
