Mercado Agricola de Montevideo

Enjoy a gastronomical tour at this vibrant food market and then admire its striking architecture and enjoy live cultural events.

The Mercado Agrícola de Montevideo (Agricultural Market of Montevideo) is one of Montevideo’s must-see attractions. Experience the sights, sounds and smells of this bustling food market. Sample everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to craft beer and Uruguay’s famous steaks. Afterwards, browse for plants, flowers and locally-made handicrafts. In 2013 the market celebrated its centennial year.

Spread throughout the market is a collection of over 100 stalls and vendors. Find colorful displays of fruits and vegetables, artisanal cheeses and cured meats, fresh fish and natural products. Browse the gift shops for kitchenware and design goods, local handicrafts, jewelry and books.

Be sure to arrive with an appetite because you’ll find several restaurants and fast food stands. Sip on craft beers or yerba mate, which is a tea commonly drunk in South America. Feast on freshly-cooked paella and tender cuts of Uruguayan beef. Sample Uruguay’s national dish, the chivito, a sandwich of thinly-sliced grilled beef topped with salad and numerous garnishes.

Besides the food, the market is also a popular location for cultural events. Enjoy live music and dance performances. Watch science demonstrations and take part in gastronomy workshops. There are activities designed specifically for children, too. Don’t miss the Museo de Máquinas (Machine Museum), located in the market’s basement. Find displays of the machines that were previously used to cool the market.

Take time to admire the market’s architecture, characterized by its colorful arched entrance, towers and tall windows. It is especially impressive at night when it is illuminated and lights up the surrounding streets.

The Mercado Agrícola de Montevideo is a short 10-minute drive north of downtown Montevideo. Several public buses provide easy access. The market is in a less desirable area of the city so it’s advisable to take a taxi if visiting after dark. While here you might want to visit the nearby Palacio Legislativo (The Legislative Palace). It’s one of Montevideo’s most architecturally-impressive buildings.

The market is open daily, from early morning until late in the evening. Admission is free. Visit the market’s official website for a schedule and pricing of the events and workshops.
