Meia Beach

Go Jet Skiing and wind surfing on the calm and clear water and enjoy the spacious setting of this enormous beach.

Running seemingly endlessly along the Atlantic Ocean, Meia Praia Beach is the largest sandy strand in the region around Lagos. It has a relaxed atmosphere and scenic setting, with a few understated cafés and bars as the only structures. Enjoy the extra space and comfort on this vast stretch of sand, whose length of 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) ensures it’s never too crowded.

Walk from the town center of Lagos toward the northeastern end of the beach, which culminates in the mouth of the Odiáxere River. The busy Lagos Marina lies at the southwestern border of the beach, with its array of bars, restaurants and lavish yachts. Note how the beach gets quieter and more spacious as you move away from the town.

Lay down a blanket on the grassy mounds that back onto the beach. A few villas and hotel resorts adorn the small roads at the back of the strand. Enjoy seafood dishes for lunch at one of the charming bars near the Meia Praia Railway Station.

Sunbathe on a hot summer day and cool down with a swim in the refreshing water. The calm waves and slow tides provide ideal family conditions. Rent a deck chair and an umbrella for a daily fee. You can also get watersports lessons and equipment here. Try Jet Skiing, kite surfing and wind surfing.

This large beach is a fine option on summer weekends, when the smaller coves and inlets are packed with vacationers. If you’re swimming, find one of the patches of the beach patrolled by lifeguards. Some sections are essentially deserted.

Meia Praia Beach is in the northern outskirts of Lagos. Take a train to the Meia Praia Railway Station and get around the area on foot. You can also walk northeast from the town center of Lagos for about 50 minutes to get here. Other attractions in the area include Parque Aventura Lagos amusement park, Clubhouse Onyria Palmares golf course and Vale da Lama Beach.
