Peruse this hub of contemporary art that sits beside a family-friendly park and an animated plaza with restaurants, shops and cafés.

Medellin Museum of Modern Art is home to more than 1,300 contemporary works spread out across four exhibition halls. It showcases movies, paintings and more abstract pieces of art. The museum hosts presentations and workshops on the theme of contemporary art. There are restaurants and cafés surrounding the gallery on a lively plaza by a park.

Spend a few hours in the air-conditioned gallery browsing the museum’s collection of modern art. A large share of the pieces is by the illustrious Medellin artist Débora Arango. Watch art house movies in the Sala de Fundiciones (Ironworks Room). It has a projector that shows movies on the wall. Attend a creative workshop to learn how to make modern art. Go to presentations by artists from the region. Take a guided tour of the building to learn about its past.

Dine at Bonuar in the same building or choose from an array of diverse restaurants in the adjoining plaza. It is a spacious square with shops, cafés and a pleasant ambience. Watch live music at some of the bars. Visit the gift store to purchase art tools and replicas of works. Take photos of the museum’s pyramid-like façade and fountains from the plaza.

The building was the site of a steel mill from 1939 until the museum’s inception in 2009. There is an admission fee, although the site is free for kids under 12 and students. The museum is open from morning until late in the afternoon except Mondays.

Medellin Museum of Modern Art backs onto the Ciudad del Rio Park, where families enjoy picnics, and kids skate and play soccer. It is fairly central in the city, between the subway stations of Poblado and Industriales. It is worth heading to the affluent Poblado area after the museum, as it is full of fashionable shops and cafés. A cab from the city’s southern bus terminal should not take more than 10 minutes to arrive at the museum.
