Marktplatz featuring a square or plaza and a statue or sculpture

Go for a stroll and view the pretty heritage streetscape around Heidelberg’s traditional market square, which is anchored by an impressive Gothic church.

Marktplatz (Market Square) is one of Heidelberg’s oldest squares and a landmark in the city’s Altstadt (Old Town). Like a time capsule in the heart of the city, Marktplatz shows a glimpse of Heidelberg’s historic heart. Take a seat at one of the cafés that spill out onto the pavement and explore the square’s heritage highlights.

The eastern section of Marktplatz is dominated by the early 18th-century Heidelberg Town Hall (Heidelberg Rathaus). Admire the different architectural styles of the building’s façade, which include Baroque, neo-Baroque, and neo-Renaissance. Continue exploring to check out the traditional houses on the north and south sides of the square.

Make your way to the square’s western edge, where the immense apse of the Church of the Holy Ghost (Heilieggeistkirche) towers overhead. Dating back to 1398, this remarkable Gothic and Baroque structure is a notable landmark in the city skyline.

In the center of the square, find the Hercules Fountain. Check out the statue of the mythological Greek hero, which was carved in 1703 and placed in the square as a symbol of Heidelberg’s resilience and commitment to rebuild after the 17th-century Thirty Years’ War.

When the weather is nice, sit beneath a sun umbrella in the outdoor dining area of a café or restaurant in the square. Look around at the historic panorama as you enjoy coffee or a meal. Local markets are held at Marktplatz twice a week. Pick up fresh produce or handmade treats at the market. In winter, the market hosts Heidelberg’s enchanting Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas market) and the Town Hall is illuminated with Christmas-themed motifs.

Marktplatz is centrally located in Heidelberg’s Altstadt (Old Town). It is an easy walk from bus stations alongside the Neckar River, as well as the Old Bridge and Heidelberg Castle. Alternatively, park on one of the streets outside the historic center and explore the district on foot. The square is open at all times of the day and is free to enter.
